Review: OZZY's Metal Shows Fatigue

August 20, 2003

David Sprague of The New York Daily News reports that "viewers of MTV's 'The Osbournes' were left this season wondering just how much reality the show actually presented. The same question came to mind when the brood's patriarch took the stage Monday (August 18) at the PNC Bank Arts Center.

"Ostensibly the ringmaster of Ozzfest's multi-ring circus, Osbourne spent most of his set looking more like an extra puttering around the stage.

"Ozzy turned to the microphone only as an afterthought — a fact well-hidden by layers of taped vocal sweetening that all but obscured the gravelly croak he displayed when obliterating 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' Sunday at Chicago's Wrigley Field.

"Ozzy has just two stage moves — a Rain Man-esque pace and a trained-seal clap-along — that he uses in virtually every song.

"Jersey-bred Zakk Wylde provided some fireworks with his surprisingly deft guitar solos, but even he had trouble generating a spark in long power ballads.

"It's not altogether surprising that MARILYN MANSON stole the show, but the sophistication he displayed in doing so was nothing short of dazzling. Outrage has yielded to a prewar Berlin decadence — if the cabaret performers there used prosthetic genitals and Mickey Mouse ears, that is." Read more.
